The co-ordinated effort taken by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the IP Offices in India has resulted in rise in domestic patent filings compared to international patent filings during January-March of 2022. Out of the total of 19,796 patent applications filed with the Indian Patent Office, 10,706 applications were filed by Indian applicants for the first time in 11 years.
According to official data, not only there is a 50% rise in the number of patent filings but also a huge jump in patent grants from the year 2014-15 to 2021-22. Additionally, patent examination time has also reduced to 5-23 months now (from 72 months in December 2016).
